"The truth is that there is nothing noble in being superior to somebody else. The only real nobility is in being superior to your former self."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
We are so preoccupied with comparing, and along with our comparing goes judgment. This is better than that, Joe is a better player than Jim (or maybe just plain better). It seems like wherever we can find a difference between two things (or people), then one has to be better than the other. Your ego, especially, thrives on being better than someone else, even if it's only better at one particular skill or talent.
This is a meaningless comparison though because the truth is that there are so many people with so many different strengths and weaknesses that whichever thing you pick to compare yourself to others with, there will inevitably be someone who is worse than you at it. But there will also inevitably be someone else who is better than you at it too. That's why it's a waste of time comparing yourself with other people.
The only comparison that is really important is the comparison between the way you are now and the way you used to be in the past. This is the only way of measuring growth, and growth is what it's all about. You can't be successful, or happy, unless you are growing; and this is what you really need to keep track of.
