"Only one thing has to change for us to know happiness in our lives: where we focus our attention."
Greg Anderson
Where do you focus your attention? We are neurologically wired to be always looking out for danger. We are always thinking ahead to what may potentially become a problem to us. We ask "What if...happens?" We even assume that because certain things have been a problem for us in the past, then they will continue to do so in the future. It's as though we have a deep faith that things are going to go wrong. And to top it all off, the media constantly bombards us with images of disturbing things, and calls it entertainment. No wonder we're so frightened and upset.
We need to change the focus of our attention. We will never be happy if we are focused on how bad the economy is, or on possible terrorist threats. You will never be happy if you are thinking about how bad your job is or how difficult your teenager is. What we need to do is to focus on what we want. Picture getting along with your teenager and having a job you really enjoy. Picture a thriving economy and peace and good-will around the world. If you can do that, you will be able to find evidence for your vision. And then you will find real happiness.
