"You can do only one thing at a time. I simply tackle one problem and concentrate all efforts on what I am doing at the moment."
Maxwell Maltz
Most of us feel like we must do as many things as possible at the same time. After all, we all know that each of us has only so much time before we die, and we don't even know how much time that is. We raise multi-tasking to an art. To do only one thing at a time seems almost sinful, and a waste of time. But the truth is that doing several things at once is actually less efficient that doing one thing at a time.
When you do several things at once, you can't concentrate fully on any one of them, so your performance isn't very good on all of them. It often takes you longer to do the same amount of tasks too because switching back and forth between tasks before you've finished any of them slows you down more than if you had completed one task before starting the next.
It helps if you have prioritized the most important and the most urgent activities so that you can get them finished first. But even if you haven't it's still best to take one thing at a time and do your best work on it till it's finished and you can put all your attention upon the next task in line. You'll not only get higher quality work done but you'll get more of it completed in the same amount of time too.
