"No one lives long enough to learn everything they need to learn starting from scratch. To be successful, we absolutely, positively have to find people who have already paid the price to learn the things that we need to learn to achieve our goals."
Brian Tracy
Once you know what your goals are, the first thing you need to do in order to move towards them to to find someone who has already done what you want to do. This is not the hard part; there are how-to books on any subject and biographies of just about anyone who accomplished something really significant, and there are people all around you doing just about anything you could possibly want to know about. The hard part is actually going up to people and asking for help.
We have never been taught to go up to people and ask them how they got started doing what they're doing, or how they accomplished the things they did. Sometimes we are afraid that they will be offended that we asked, or won't want to tell us what we need to know. Sometimes we are afraid that they will think less of us because we don't have our life together as much as we would like. Sometimes we are afraid that they will expect something back from us that we don't have to give.
The truth is that people usually love to talk about their accomplishments, and will feel flattered you asked. Typically the more successful people have been, the more willing they are to help someone else get started. They won't think any the less of you because you're just a beginner. And they often won't expect anything other that you help someone else when you get successful too. If you encounter someone who isn't like this, just look for someone else who is. You'll find them if you look.
Seek out people who have been successful doing what it is that you want to do. You can't make all the mistakes yourself, and you don't want to either. Learn from others, so that you can be as successful as they have been in a much shorter time.
